Contract Type: Project-based
Position Purpose
The Resident Engineer will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision, monitoring, and quality
assurance of construction of bulk water (steel pipe) and water reticulation works. The incumbent will
ensure that construction activities are carried out in accordance with design specifications, contract
requirements, and relevant standards, while providing technical guidance to the Contractor and
reporting to the Project Manager and the Project Engineer.
Key Responsibilities
• Supervise and monitor site works related to construction of bulk water (steel pipe) and water
reticulation works namely construction of:
i. Steel bulk pipeline,
ii. Reinforced concrete valve chambers,
iii. Water reticulation system,
iv. Cathodic protection.
v. Pipe jacking.
• Ensure compliance with approved designs, drawings, specifications, contract conditions, and
statutory regulations.
• Carry out quality control checks on materials, workmanship, and completed works.
• Conduct regular site inspections and prepare progress, technical, and compliance reports.
• Assist in managing construction programmes, budgets, and claims.
• Coordinate with the Contractor, Sub-consultants, and Employer’s representatives to resolve
site issues.
• Ensure that occupational health and safety standards are maintained on site.
• Verify and certify completed works for payment purposes.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering
• Registered or eligible for registration with ECSA (Pr.Eng, Pr.TechEng, or Candidate level).
• Minimum of 5–8 years’ experience in bulk water and water reticulation works, with at least 3
years in a site supervisory/resident engineer role.
• Sound knowledge of SANS, COLTO, SANRAL, and municipal standards.
• Strong understanding of construction contracts -General Conditions of Contracts (GCC).
• Proven experience in quality assurance, project reporting, and contractor management.
• Valid Driver’s License (Code B) and willingness to stay close and travel to project site.
Skills and Competencies
• Strong technical and problem-solving skills.
• Good leadership, supervisory, and communication abilities.
• Ability to prepare clear and concise technical documentation and reports.
• Computer literacy (MS Office, MS Project, AutoCAD advantageous).
• Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines.
